Two kinds of pastel marks
From subject to drawn pigment
Upload a photo or describe a portrait, landscape or still life. Soft pastel is the default, so a photo alone is enough. Include the words oil pastel in your prompt if you want denser waxy strokes instead of powdery blending.
Generate the drawing and inspect the balance of loose strokes and finer detail. Ask for softer rubbed areas, stronger hatching or a smaller palette in your next prompt. Keep the main subject clear while allowing the surface to look visibly drawn.
Download the version you prefer and check faces, fur and small objects at full size. Compare the result with the reference if likeness matters. For a larger layout, review the texture at the intended display or print size.
The pastel medium
Broken strokes, dry hatching and small flecks of the ground create the drawn surface. Softer rubbed passages connect those marks into larger forms. The subject and background are both interpreted through pigment, so the image can feel cohesive rather than lightly tinted.
Soft pastel favors powdery edges and velvety transitions. An oil pastel direction asks for denser color, creamy strokes and layered scribbled marks. Name the approach in your prompt when it matters; there is no separate medium switch to configure.
Pastel drawings can use cobalt, violet, ochre and green as well as pale colors. A warm ground showing between cooler strokes can add depth. Describe your palette and lighting instead of assuming the medium must make every color faint.
Three directions for the medium
Name the subject, light and type of pastel. Use oil pastel explicitly when you want the waxier treatment.
Try a sandy path through coastal grasses, a blue-gray sea and a lavender sky. Ask for powdery strokes, rubbed blue shadows and warm ochre highlights. Keep the large land, sea and sky shapes clear before adding fine grass marks.
Describe a cat resting on a blue cushion or a person beside a window. Use soft pastel, a few crisp eye details and looser hatching around the outer edges. This gives the focal features attention while the rest stays drawn and expressive.
Try peaches in a cobalt bowl beside a green bottle on a coral table. Ask for rich waxy color, creamy strokes and visible layered marks. A few simple objects leave room to explore the difference between dense pigment and open texture.
